Saraswati Puja

This postcard shows various idols of Goddess Saraswati, all kept in a row at a store. These idols are waiting to be painted and decorated with sarees and ornaments, then taken to various houses and pandals for the Puja to begin. The face of the Goddess is covered with a newspaper from the shop, to be opened only when the Puja begins. Its a great pomp and joy for students, and Goddess Saraswati is the icon of knowledge, science and music. All schools and colleges in West Bengal have Puja Celebrations of their own, with morning prayers, Anjali where students chant mantras and offer flowers, and later lunch of Khidchdi and sweets. Girls wear traditional sarees and boys wear kurtas. The day after Saraswati Puja is generally a holiday.
