Ludwig Leichhardt

The postcard shows Gregory's search party for Leichhardt travelling over desert. Leichhardt undertook three major expeditions in Australia: an overland expedition from the Darling Downs to Port Essington, in 1846, to cross Australia east to west; and a final eastwest quest to cross the continent from the Condamine River to the Swan River. This last expedition, which set out in March 1848, resulted in the disappearance of Leichhardt and his entire party. No remains have ever been found.
