Joshinetsu Kogen National Park is located in the valley of the Yokoyu-River, in the northern part of Oita. Jigokudani means "Hell's Valley", because steam and boiling water bubbles out of small crevices in the frozen ground, surrounded by steep cliffs and cold and hostile forests.
