The Alexander Nevsky Monastery was founded by Peter the Great, seven years after the foundation of Petersburg, in July 1710. The monastery encloses some of the oldest buildings and churches in the city, as well as cemeteries with graves of icons of Russian culture, such as
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Glinka,Leonhard Euler, Mikhail Lomonosov, Alexander Suvorov, Nikolay Karamzin, Modest Mussorgsky and Karl Ivanovic Rossi among many others.
